The Travancore Royal family
TheTravancore Royal Familywas the ruling house of theIndianprincely state ofTravancore. Theylost their ruling rights in 1949 when Travancore merged with theIndian Unionand theirprivilegeswere abolished by the Indian Union in 1971 by a constitutional amendment. The family descends from theVenadline of theCheraand theKolathirisofMushika, andholds the distinction of beingSamantha Kshatriya. The Travancore Royalty are also descendants of thePandyaandCholadynasties as well, due to consistent intermarriages between theChera, Pandya, Chileans Kolathiri dynasties over the centuries.
According to one existing version, the founding members of the Travancore royal familyare said to have come to Kerala, from the banks of theNarmadariver. Another belief is thatParashuramahimself crowned thefirst official ruler in the dynasty.

Sree Padmanabhaswamy is the chief family deity. The Royal family is alternatively known as theKupakaSwaroopam,Thripappur Swaroopam,VenadSwaroopam,Vanchi Swaroopametc. It has its seat today atThiruvananthapuraminKerala,India. The last rulingMaharajahof Travancore was SreeChithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, died on 20 July 1991 after a stroke.
SreeUthradom Thirunal Marthanda Varma, the younger brother of the last ruling monarch of theKingdom of Travancore,Maharajah Chitra Thirunal Rama Varma, died at a private hospital in the early hours on 16 December2013. He was succeeded byMoolam Thirunal Rama Varma, son of MaharaniKarthika ThirunalLakshmi Bayiand Lt. Col.G. V. Raja.
