Since the Gold and Silver is being carried from India to Britain on the
Gairsoppa which was torpedoed by the German ship and sank the same along
with the cargo and the crew and now it is being detected and therefore
the wealth should be returned to India after amicable settlement with
the company which which unearth the booty and taken out from the deep

For those in the western world who still believe the British rule in India was a fair deal, they don't need to look further for evidence. For those who still believe that the Kohinoor diamond adorning the Queen's crown was gifted by a seven year old boy, also don't need to look any further.

other countries and have enriched themselves.

"Forty-eight tonnes of silver bullion that spent more than 70 years at the bottom of the North Atlantic have been hauled to the surface and returned to its rightful owner, the British government"!!! How Britain is the rightful owner.....have they paid for the loot they were taking from India?

Stealing a precious thing from the owner, doesn't mean that precious thing belongs to theif. It still belongs to the Owner i.e INDIA. When will British people learn this?

This shows the richness of India. Our country was a richest country in the world and looted for 800 years by Moguls and by Britishers. Now our own politicians looting,It makes no difference for common man! Even our Prime Minister with full effort brings back all the wealth,it will be grabbed by his corrupt team. Country and Common man will not be benefited!!

Glad to hear they recovered the contents.

@Roopesh : Are you kidding me? The poor were very poor during the Mughal rule. All the riches were held by elite ruling class. Obviously this silver was a result of colonial mining, over taxation and over working of the poor miners.

Why india does not claim for it. It was our property being siphoned to UK. With our increasing economic & military clout we should assert our ownership on these valuable resources. Even 65 years after independence whay we are not willing to assert our rights on all resources taken away by the british govertment during colonial rule. Unless and Until we demand, nobody will be donating us. Time is ripe to take initiative to get back our rights. Same is the case with the KOHINOOR diamond being used by British monarch. It's our property and our national pride. We should strive to get them back.

How much more stupid or mischievous could you get, dear William Broad?
You write "Forty-eight tonnes of silver bullion that spent more than 70 years at the bottom of the North Atlantic have been hauled to the surface and returned to its rightful owner, the British government", and then you state that the booty was taken from India! I think you guys are still living in the past! Its true, we, Indians are partly, if not wholly, to blame for this condition of affairs. Had we been more united, upright and hardworking, you would'nt have made us slaves and robbed us of our riches.

returned to its rightful owner, the British government!!!
Is this guy a British? How can he decide that? I guess it belongs to India not Britain. Shameful Britishers would snatch wealth from anyone even if the other guy is a beggar and Britain is a rich Nation anyway. They earn even money by making movies like slum dog... Can Britains be fair and return the wealth to the real rightfull owner India!!!

Familiarity breeds contempt. Afterall the rightful owner as titled by the author, should have had enough of the loots from many nations. Let the toil and labor it originated from be returned to its imperial victim.

This is a mere example that India was looted by foreign nationals for
centuries viz. British, Portugese, Greeks, Persians, Mughals etc. by way
of minerals, tea, spices and labour force too and they destroyed our
wealth & culture too. Now it is too late to recover from these lost.
India should awake, arise from foreign influences are still going on
various levels.

What right do we have now to claim it? Did India ever bother about it? Many of our treasures lie in foreign soil, what have we done about it. Our lands have been encroached upon and we live in denial. The company and people who invested their efforts, time and money deserve it.

Robert Clive alone looted enormous gold and silver and other resources. He made 900 ships trips to England to transport the wealth. He himself told in British parliament. India must claim all that wealth back to the country!

I am surprised to read "..returned to its rightful owner, the British government." How can they be rightful. It was loot and should be returned to India. But then question is what will India do with this money. I think most of it will be eaten by corruption, greedy politician. In any case, I think statement is incorrect. British can't be rightful owner.

let us be honest. we should claim our property since it was looted but
the cost of digging them out and preserving them should be paid by us
even it is more than the worth of the property itself!!!!!!!

England should be honest to return back the recovered silver to India. And India should pay the concerned, double the cost of exploration and recovery of
the valuable material with reasonable additional charges for the unremitting services involved in the recovery of the precious metal and it is a matter to be sadly recorded that neither any govt from India has ever made any attempt to pursue the matter nor any historian has brought it to the fore or enlightened the public about this colossal loss.

Notwithstanding the Prime Minister's eulogy of the benefits of British raj at Cambridge, the Brits have been singularly interested in "harvesting" pre-independence India for wealth. Not just India, other places including the Americas too. What a parasite!!

You cannot expect anything from this Government of Man Mohan Singh. The
corrupt Government may go for a secret pact for sharing this booty and
the settled booty may be deposited in any foreign bank.Expecting
anything good for this country is merely a dream.Look at the present scenario of the country,Rahul Ghandi who accepted the failure in U.P.
election now has been elevated to higher post because of Sonia's
son.Man mohan Singh is totally failure in controlling the cabinet
Minister and still harps for a better future of the country.Let us
pray to the almighty to give sense to the supporter of this UPA Govt.y
as they are equally responsible for degrading the economic condition
of the country.
