Mohan (Prem Nazir), the only son of the rich landlord of ‘Lakshmi Bhavanam loses his father in childhood. The manager (Nanukuttan) manages to secure all the wealth of the family, throwing Mohan and his mother out on the streets. Soon, Mohan loses his mother also. Adopted by a kind hearted land lord of ‘Ananda Bhavanam,’ Mohan is brought up along with his children Venu (Thikkurissi) and Sarojam (Kumari Thankam) After the death of the landlord, Venu takes charge of the household.

Kamalam (Pankajavalli), the daughter of the wicked manager who cheated Mohan and his family, is married to Venu. Kamalam’s lecherous brother Ramu, who is in love with Sarojam, plays all kinds of nasty tricks to get married with the support of Kamalam. But Sarojam, who is in love with Mohan, staves off his advances. Pressurised by his wife Venu expels Mohan from the house. Ramu and his gang beat up Mohan. He seeks refuge in a nearby estate.

Meanwhile, Kamalam hatches a plot for the marriage between Ramu and Sarojam. Venu is poisoned and Sarojam donates blood to save her brother. Venu is saved. He realises his mistakes and understands the misdeeds of his wife. Mohan returns to the village. Venu gives his sister in marriage to Venu bringing the film to a happy end.

The film had all the ingredients of a typical entertainer– songs, dances, comedy scenes etc. Though the story was absolutely unrealistic it did not in anyway affect its success. The dance dramas ‘Swargavaathil’ and ‘Ramanan’ that were included were added attractions.

Prem Nazir and Thikkurissi excelled in their roles. Kumari Thankam, the glamour girl of the time was the main attraction. The comedy team of S.P.Pillai, Adoor Pankajam, Muthukulam and Vanakkutti, were reduced to mere repetitions of the usual comic scenes.

The grand success of the film encouraged the producers to remake it in Tamil, ‘Pashiyin Kodumai.’ It had Prem Nazir, Thikkurissi and Kumari Thankam in the lead roles along with other leading stars of Tamil cinema like M .S .Draupadi, and Madhuri Devi in important roles. The success of the Tamil remake paved way for a Telugu dubbed version titled ‘Aakali Piluppu.’

The Malayalam film had 12 songs penned by Abhayadev and tuned by P. S. Divakar. Some of the songs became super hits and a few have stood the test of time. Though noted actor Jose Prakash made his debut as playback singer in the film ‘Shariyo Thetto,’ released in 1953, ‘Vishappinte Vili’ was the first to be released. A duet ‘Chinthayil neerunna jeevitham…’ sung with Kaviyoor Revamma turned a super hit. Another duet sung by A.M.Raja and P.Leela, ‘Mohiniye, enn athma Mohiniye…’ was also very popular.

Will be remembered: For the songs, ‘Chinthayil neerunna… and ‘Mohiniye enn athma Mohiniye…’ Also, Jose Prakash’s first released film song was in this movie. It will also be remembered as the film in which Ambika, who later went on to reign supreme as heroine in the late 50s and early 60s, made her debut.
Photography by E.R.Cooper and editing by P.V.Varghese enhanced the quality of the film. It ran to full houses for weeks and months.

    BIOGRAPHY

    Early life

Nazir was born in Chirayinkeezhu in the princely state of Travancore, to Akkode Shahul Hamid and Asuma Beevi. His mother died when he was very young. He completed his formal education from Kadinamkulam Lower Primary School, Sri Chithiravilasam School, S D College (Alappuzha), and Saint Berchman's College (Changanassery). By the time he completed his education, he had become an experienced drama artist. It was on the sets of his second movie, Visappinte Vili (1952), that Abdul Khader was renamed Prem Nazir by Thikkurussi Sukumaran Nair.

    Entry into cinema

Prem Nazir had his acting debut as Shylock in the play The Merchant of Venice (1951), when he was a student at SB College, Changanacherry. He won the best actor award for this role in the play directed by Sheppard. His first film was Marumakal (1952), directed by S. K. Chari and produced by Paul Kallungal. He was credited Abdul Khader itself in this film. He got his career break with Visappinte Vili (1952), his second film, made for K&K Combines (Udaya Studio) by Telegu director Mohan Rao. PremNazir started his career when drama was the most popular visual medium and film making at its infancy. He started acting for the Excel Productions (Udaya Studio) and most of his films were for the Udaya and Merryland Studios.

    Rise to stardom

With the arrival of Nazir, there was a new screen personality, a new debonair actor who could be the heart throb of the youth. Prem Nazir acquired the halo of a romantic hero and a loyal following. His tear-jerkers were very popular with women audiences and soon made him a darling of the masses. He soon became the first real star of Malayalam cinema. Another factor that helped Prem Nazir's instant rise — as it had the rise of his contemporaries in other regional film industries — was the continuing reign of mythologicals and devotionals. Costumed musicals, filmed start-to-finish within the confines of a studio, contributed their own. All such films for a long period kept him before his fans, nourished his romantic image and provided him unlimited scope for rehearsing and refining his talent in essaying diverse roles. Since the bulk of South Indian cinema was theatrical visually and aurally, Prem Nazir's stage background and his extraordinary command of Malayalam helped him win the hearts of his audience.

    .

    Golden years

In the late 50s, Nazir drew attention by playing movies with themes based on social and religious injustices in the society. From 1956 to 1976, Prem Nazir rode high at the crest of a tidal wave of popularity and also gave his best to Malayalam cinema. Nazir catapulted to the row of the finest actors of India with the film Iruttinte Athmavu (1967). Playing a demented youth — Velayadhan, Prem Nazir discovered his prowess as a dramatic actor of great intensity. Many critics have evaluated this role as his masterpiece, and as one of the finest onscreen performances ever. Written by M. T. Vasudevan Nair, the film provided Malayalam cinema with a new direction; that of the low budget film. One could see a lot of the pre-occupations of the scenarist, who carried the touches of human relationships through all of his subsequent films whether as screenplay writer or director. In spite of its large number of studio shots and overall theatricality, the film was so culturally rich that many of the episodes would become archetypes for future Malayalam film makers dealing with family drama. It depicted the story of an imbecile (finely portrayed by Prem Nazir) in a joint family with remarkable sensitivity and seriousness of purpose.

During his peak time, Nazir gave life to many characters and enjoyed a wide popularity among all sects of the society. He has played historical characters based on Vadakkan Pattukal. Aromalunni, Kannappanunni, Thacholi Ambu and Padayottam are some major films in this genre. Although the actor faced criticism for playing such roles as his physique was least suited for it, he still enjoyed a huge fan following among the audiences. He was well known for his roles as Hindu deities like Rama, Krishna and Ayyappa. In his movies, Nazir was well known for essaying the eternal romantic hero and the good guy who would bash up the villains without remorse.

Even though Nazir could not regenerate after the mid-1970s, he maintained his superstardom till the beginning of 1980s. In 1979, 39 of his films got released; a record. He also holds the record for having acted in the most leading roles – about 700 films (with 85 heroines; another record). Another record is for the most enduring screen team along with actress Sheela. They played opposite each other in 130 movies by 1975. Although Sheela is known as the lucky mascot of Prem Nazir, his movies with other heroines like Jayabharathi and Sharada were also big successes at box office. Prem Nazir pairing with comedian Adoor Bhasi was a sure-fire laugh riot. The void left by this duo is yet to be occupied. Nazir's association with playback singer K. J. Yesudas was perfect for the audience. Even today many consider the Nazir – Yesudas combination of song sequences remains the best ever on screen. He is quite popularly described as Nithyaharithanayakan (The Evergreen Hero), which do justice to the fact that he was acting as the hero in his elder years as well. Senior Malayalam cine actress Kaviyoor Ponnamma has revealed that Prem Nazir was a very good singer, and had training in Carnatic music.

    Late career

By the beginning of 1980s, Nazir himself moved into supporting roles. He mostly played supporting roles with the then super stars Jayan, Sukumaran and Soman. In 1981, he played a major supporting role in Mohan's Vida Parayum Munpe that earned him the Kerala State Special Jury Award. This shift, from a super romantic hero to character roles, gave him many powerful characters during the mid-1980s. His last completed film was A. T. Abu's Dhwani (1989), in which he co-starred with Jayaram. His last release was Priyadarshan's Kadathanadan Ambadi (1990), in which he co-starred with Mohanlal. In one of his last interviews, he had expressed a desire to direct a film with Mammootty and Mohanlal in the lead.

    Personal life

Prem Nazir was a teetotaller. He was not only a fine actor but also a good human being. He tried his hand in politics and had joined the Congress Party but he never contested elections. He was also a social reformer and with a helping mentality to others. He helped with money to some public needs in and around Chirayinkeezhu. e.g.:- Koonthalloor School, Chirainkeezhu Hospital, Palakunnu Library etc. Nazir also wrote a book on the film characters he essayed, Enne Thediyetha Kathapathrangal.

Prem Nazir's younger brother Prem Nawaz (Abdul Wahab) also acted in a few films. Although he was the first in the family to begin acting in movies, he later began producing films – Agniputhri, Thulaavarsham, Poojakku Edukatha Pookkal, Neethi and Keni to name a few. Prem Nawaz's only son, Prem Kishore has also had a stint with the industry by acting in two Malayalam films – Vacation and Thaskaraputran. Prem Nawaz has the distinction of acting in the first ever colour film made in Malayalam – Kandam Vechu Kottu. Prem Nazir's son Shahnawaz acted in a few films as well but could not succeed like his father.

Prem Nazir has three daughters viz. Laila (married to Engineer Rashid of Trivandrum & settled at Calicut), Rasiya (married to Mr.Hashim, Businessman from Kannur & settled at Chennai) – both elder to Shanawas. The youngest daughter is Rita (married to Doctor Sharafuddin of Punalur & settled at Muscat). Shanawas's wife Aisha (Malaysia) is the daughter of the eldest sister of Prem Nazir Late Suleikha Beevi.

The first film he produced and acted in was "Sthree" (1950), but the one that stabilised his stature as an actor, was "Jeevitha Nauka," (1951). Made by K and K Productions and directed by K. Vembu, it starred him along with B. S. Saroja in the lead. A roaring hit and a trendsetter, "Jeevitha Nauka" was further dubbed into four languages including Hindi. The next year he acted in "Navalokam" based on a social theme along with Miss Kumari as his heroine. The year 1952 witnessed another big hit "Visappinte Vili") in which he teamed up with Prem Nazir, an aspiring novice then, was an instant success and the two went on to make an impressive pair in a couple of films.
    Scene from movie "Sundhari"
Thereafter it was films and films all the way, which established Thikkurissy's stature as a mature and much-sought-after actor.
Having penned the story, screenplay, dialogue and lyrics for "Shariyo Thetto", the next year, besides appearing in the pivotal role and directing it, he created a unique record, which has not been surpassed so far.
He had been a lyricist for several films which include "Sthree'... "Palunku Paathram", "Devasundari", "Urvashi Bharathi", "Poojapushpam" and "Balloon".
While he pursued a predictable pattern in screenplays, he had a penchant for punchy dialogue that went well with the audience. He tinged his lines honeydew of romanticism adding pinch of erotica for extra effect. Noted for its choice of words and subtlety of expression, 'Kaarkoonthal Kettinethinu Vaasanathailam , from "Urvashi Bharati" ranks at par with the finest piece in Malayalam.
    Scene from movie "Achan"

Among the movies scripted by him are "Sree Ayyappan", "Muthalali" and "Aana Valarthiya Vanambadi". He donned the director's mantle for many a successful film including "Nurse", "Poojapushpam", "Saraswati", "Chilampoli", "Achante Bharya" and "Urvashi Bharati". As far as acting goes, he was at home with any type of role, benign or bizarre, majestic or macabre. Whatever the part, he plunged himself heart and soul into its interpretation. For him, acting was not an act of imitation but an intimate art of innovation and improvisation. This was exactly why he could associate himself with avant-garde as well as mainstream films evincing equal flair and felicity in both.
    Scene from movie "Sree Ramapatabhishekham"

It was a kind of exploration! Thikkurissy comes to life every time you watch him play a character on screen. School master, Decent Sankaran Pillai.... and many more, he played them all. The great actor may be gone but his films shall live forever.
As somebody remarked a movie actor never dies for he shall always live in his movies. So will Thikkurissy.

He also evinced a keen skill in oratory and earned considerable fame as an eloquent speaker and his speeches were noted for their literary flavour. This ability to engage and enthrall audiences stood him in good stead when he embarked on the acting vocation.
He was also responsible for naming personalities and organisations that made their mark.Renowned director Priyadarsan was christened by him. So was the great Prem Nazir. Mohanlal's Production company was named 'Pranavam' by Thikkurissy. There are many institutions including Barbershops to Business Hotels, which he has inaugurated.

    Biography

Thikkurissy Sukumaran Nair was a Malayali Indian poet, playwright, script writer, lyricist, orator, film director and actor, though he is best known as an actor in Malayalam cinema. He is the recipient of Padmashri from the Government of India, which is one of the highest civilian honors in India. In a career that spanned about 47 years, he acted in over 700 films. He is considered to be the first movie star in Malayalam cinema.

    Early life
Sukumaran Nair was born on 16 October 1916 in the village of Thikkurissy, then a part of Travancore. Thikkurissy, the village is now in Nanchinadu, Kanyakumari district, Tamilnadu. He was born in an aristocratic family to Mangat C. Govinda Pillai and N. Lekshmi Amma. He was proved a good writer and orator even when he was schooling in Marthanda Varma School.

He wrote his first poem at the age of 8 and his poem was published for the first time whe he was 14 in Dhakshina Bharathi. His poems were collectively published as a book named Kedavilakku when he was 20 . His parents wanted him to secure a government job, but he launched his career in writing and arts even before he completed his studies. Incidetly, his sister L. Omanakkunjamma was the first female magistrate in India and the first female I. A. S. officer from Kerala.

    Career
He launched his career as a playwright. His plays Mareechika and Kalakaran were hugely successful. He then went on to write 3 more plays tilted Sthree, Maya and Sariyo Thetto which revolutionised the professional play scenario in Malayalam. He replaced the melodramatic romantic musicals that ruled the roost till then, with dialogue centred prose plays having themes of realism and social importance.

He entered into the Malayalam film industry in 1950, which was at its early years with only about 10 films produced till then. He debuted in the film industry with the film adaptaion of breakthrough play Sthree with the same title. He produced the film and played the pratogonist as well. But, the film failed to make much impact at the box-office, the film scene in Kerala then being ruled by Tamil and Hindi films.

Thikkurussy's next film Jeevithanauka(1951), produced by K and K Productions and directed by K. Vembu was a turning point in Malayalam film history. The film which dealt with the theme of ego clashes in a joint family was a big commercial success and is being touted as the first superhit in Malayalam film history. The success of the film also made Thikkurissy the first superstar of Kerala.

Jeevithanauka was dubbed into 4 languages including Hindi. In 1952, he acted in Navalokam with a socially significant theme along with Miss Kumari, who would later become the pet of the masses after the success of Neelakkuyil(1954). Navalokam did not make it big at the box office, but Thikkurissy cemented his superstardom with a big hit in the same year. The film titled Visappinte Vili also had Prem Nazir, then a novice.

Thikkurissy was the person who coined Prem Nazir's screenname whose actual name was Abdul Khader. In 1953, another landmark film of his titled Sariyo Thetto was released. The film was a film adaptation of his play in the same name. The film had him handling the story, screenplay, dialogues, lyrics and dircetion departments besides playing the pivotal role. With that Thikkurissy established himself as an inseparable element of Malayalam film industry.

He was credited with lyrics, screenplay and direction in many films. The 13 films for which he was the lyricist includes Sthree, Palunku Paathram, Devasundari, Urvashi Bharathi, Poojapushpam and Balloon.
