File:Old photo of KSRTC Bus Station.jpg
ABOVE-TRAVANCORE BUS STAND 1950'S -CAN SEE FORD ,CHEVROLET,COMMER ,FARGO BUSES .ALL IMPORTED FROM AMERICA AND ENGLAND .NO MOTOR VEHICLES WERE ALLOWED TO BE MADE IN INDIA BY INDIA'S RULING MONEY GRABBING RULERS -BRITAIN
BRITISH FORD(ALSO CALLED BED FORD)BUSES USED ON TRAVANCORE ROADS OF 1950,THE SIDES HAD CANVAS SHEET TO PREVENT RAIN AND NOT GLASSES AS SHOWN
ROAD ROLLER with steam engine OF 1940 KERALA :- STEAM ENGINES WERE COMMON AS TRAIN ENGINES,ROAD ROLLERS,EVEN A FEW PASSENGER BUSES.ITS ENGINE SOUND WAS SAME AS THAT OF STEAM TRAIN ENGINE ,EVEN THE WHISTLE SOUND WAS SAME AS THAT OF TRAIN ENGINES THE LAST OF THESE STEAM ROAD ROLLER WAS FOUND RUSTING IN THE COMPOUND OF P.W.D. GOVT OFFICE JUST BEHIND MASCOT HOTEL AT TRIVANDRUM CITY 4 YEARS AGO ,BUT EVEN THOUGH EFFORTS WERE MADE TO RESCUE THE ENGINE FROM TOTAL DESTRUCTION THE SCIENCE MUSEUM OF TVM JUST ACROSS THE ROAD DID'NT TAKE ANY INTEREST
A marshal &co road roller,most road rollers in Travancore was marshal&co (made in england)
TILL ABOUT 20 YEARS AGO, ALL THESE STEAM ROLLERS WERE LYING RUSTING IN VARIOUS P.W.D. OFFICES OF KERALA .STILL ONE OR TWO MAY BE FOUND; IF SOMEBODY SEARCH FOR IT ;AND IF FOUND PLEASE MAKE THE CONCERNED OFFICERS UNDERSTAND HOW PRECIOUS THESE ARE .THAT IS MY REQUEST
"> coal gas cylinder at back of bus story of coal gas:- during second world war(1939 to 1945) english led army was defeated by japenese in east and by nazis germany in west( dunkirk )and petrol became scarce as british petrol tankers were sunk by german and japenese submarines,there was petrol famine along with food famine .so british decided to run bus and c

coal -gas bus .coal is converted into coal gas ,by cranking the handle for about 15 minutes .the coal gas was used to run the buses in 1940-1945 during 2nd world war ,due to non availability of petrol

ar on coal gas Dennis Charabanc THIS WAS THE TYPE OF OPEN BODY BUS ON THIRUVALLA TO MALLAPPALLY ROUTE IN 1950 BUT IT HAD A FLAT ROOF , (SUPPORTED BY 4 STEEL RODS IN 4 CORNERS AND FEW MORE STEEL RODS ON THE SIDES) TO KEEP THE PASSENGERS DRY,IN THE MONSOON RAINS OF KERALA Dennis Charabanc FIRST BUS OF 'BEST' COMPANY IN BOMBAY 1926 WAS OF THIS TYPE ; HERE THE ENTIRE ENGINE IS OUTSIDE OF THE BUS BODY; AND THESE WERE THE USUAL BUSES OF THAT TIME 1926 Morris Town bus ANOTHER BUS OF THAT ERA (1940-1960)AND SEE THAT THE ENGINE IS INSIDE THE BUS ,WITH JUST THE RADIATOR OUT SIDE.SUCH BUSES WHERE FIRST SEEN ON KERALA ROADS DURING 2ND WORLD WAR ,AND MAINLY OF AMERICAN COMPANIES CHEVROLET AND FORD.AS THESE WERE RARE IN THE BEGINNING ,PEOPLE OF TRAVANCORE USED TO CALL SUCH BUSES "MURI-MOOKKAN "MEANS HALF NOSED!!(BECAUSE ONLY HALF THE ENGINE IS SEEN OUTSIDE) NOW ALL MODERN BUSES ARE MURI-MOOKKANS ! ! FIRST CAR MADE(ASSEMBLED)IN INDIA(1954); MODELLED ON BRITISH MORRIS CAR; LATER KNOWN AS HINDUSTAN LAND MASTER AND HINDUSTAN AMBASSADOR OR JUST 'HM' AS THESE CARS WERE MADE IN THE FIRST INDIAN CAR COMPANY APPROPRIATELY CALLED HINDUSTAN=INDIA ;AT CALCUTTA A BUS SIMILAR TO 1940 BUSES IN THE INTERIOR OF TRAVANCORE ;EACH BUS HAD IN ADDITION TO THE DRIVER AND CONDUCTOR ; A PERSON KNOWN AS ' CLEANER' WHOSE JOBS IN ADDITION TO CLEANING THE BUS ;INCLUDED -PUSHING THE BUS TO START SOME TIME;CHANGING THE TYRE IF PUNCTURED(AS THERE WERE NO TYRE SHOPS OR ANY OTHER SHOPS IN MOST PLACES ).AND IN 'COAL GAS BUSES'- A PERSON TO CRANK THE CRANK WHEEL AT THE BACK OF THE BUS TILL COAL WAS CONVERTED TO COAL GAS (BUSES WHICH WAS USED DURING SECOND WORLD WAR ;WHICH USED TO RUN ON COAL ; AS THERE WAS SEVERE PETROL FAMINE ;DUE TO ATTACK ON PETROL TANKERS BY HITLER'S SUBMARINE SHIPS ;AND DUE TO CAPTURE OF BURMA(NOW MYANMAR) WHICH WAS THE ONLY PLACE UNDER BRITISH INDIA EMPIRE PRODUCING PETROL; AND WHICH WAS CAPTURED BY JAPENESE AFTER DEFEATING BRITISH SOLDIERS THERE) FIRST A SMALL INFO ON BUSES OF 1950:-ALL BUSES WERE OF PETROL ENGINE AND PETROL WAS VERY CHEAP 1 GALLON OF PETROL(EQALS 4 LITRE) WAS JUST 15 RUPEESS OR 1 LITRE PETROL WAS JUST 3 RUPEES .THERE WERE NO DIESEL BUSES OR CARS AND SUCH ENGINES WERE UNHEARD OF AT THAT TIME.ALL BUS ENGINES WERE OF BRITISH IMPORT BECAUSE INDIA HAD NOT STARTED PRODUCTION YET ; OF ITS FIRST CAR AND BUS AFTER BRITAIN LEFT INDIA IN 1947. THE BUSES WERE CALLED BRITISH FORD OR BED FORD .ANOTHER BUS ENGINES WAS MADE BY BRITISH COMER CO.YET ANOTHER WAS BRITISH LEYLAND BUS CO . [BRITISH POLICY WAS TO FORCIBLY MAKE ITS COLONIES IMPORT PRODUCTS FROM BRITAIN WHETHER IT WAS PENCILS OR CARS ;AND THIS WAS ONE OF THERE ILLEGAL TRADE POLICIES TO LEACH MONEY OUT OF ITS COLONIES AND TO MAKE BRITAIN RICH ;OF COURSE THEY HAD ILLEGAL TAXES LIKE SALT TAX WHICH LED TO THE FAMOUS SALT SATYAGRAHA OF GANDHI ] BUS BODIES WERE THE FIRST TO BE MADE IN INDIA MAINLY FROM WOOD' MANY OPEN BODIED BUSES,MADE IN SUCH AWAY,THAT PEOPLE COULD GET IN AND OUT OF BUSES FROM THE OPEN SIDES DIRECTLY ON TO THEIR SEATS(SEE THE TOP PHOTO OF AN OPEN BODY BUS OF THAT TIME).THE FIRST OF SUCH BUSES WERE ON THE ROAD IN 1912 DRIVEN BY TVSUNDERAM IYENGAR AND CO (NOW THE FAMOUS TVS)THE LAST OF SUCH BUSES WERE SEEN ON TRAVANCORE ROADS IN 1950'S AFTER WHICH IT ALL GOT SCRAPED ROADS OF 1950:- MENTIONED BEFORE ONCE THAT MOST ROADS WERE JUST METAL(CHIPS OF SMALL PIECES OF ROCK PRESSED INTO LOOSE SAND WITH THE HELP OF STEAM ROAD ROLLER OR HAND PULLED ROLLER) AND TAR ROADS WERE CONFINED TO FEW ROADS IN CAPITAL CITY OF TRIVANDRUM .IT WAS BONE BREAKING TYPE OF JOLTS TO TRAVEL ON SUCH ROADS.SO THE BUSES USED TO TRAVEL SLOW .MANY A TIME LOOSE METAL USED TO GET DISLODGED BY THE BUS TYRE AND FLY AROUND INJURING THE FEW RARE PEOPLE WALKING ON THE ROAD.ONCE WHILE TRAVELLING BY A CAR FROM TRIVANDRUM TO KOLLAM THE STEERING WHEEL JUMPED OUT OF THE DRIVERS HAND BECAUSE OF CONSTANT SEVERE JOLTS; BY LOOSE STONES ON THE ROAD. CARS OF THAT ERA NEEDED REPEATED TOPPING OF RADATOR WITH WATER .FOR WHICH A JERRY CAN FULL OF WATER HAD TO BE CARRIED ON LONG DISTANCE TRAVEL.ONCE THE DRIVER FORGOT TO CARRY THE WATER CAN WHEN STARTING FROM TRVNDRUM CITY AND THE CAR STOPPED AT A PLACE BETWEEN TRIVANDRUM AND KOLLAM .IT WAS 12 NOON .'THE LOOSE METAL HIGHWAY' WAS EMPTY OF ANY SORT OF TRAFFIC AND PEOPLE (AS POPULATION AND CARS WERE VERY LOW IN 1950'S) AND IT WAS COMPLETE SILENCE DUE TO THIS .SEARCHED FOR A HUMAN HABITATION OR ANY FARM BUT COULD NOT FIND ANY WITHIN LOOKING DISTANCE,[COMPARE THIS WITH THE HEAVY TRAFFIC AND OVERCROWDING OF PEOPLE AND HOUSES EVERY WHERE IN KERALA]FINALLY AFTER WALKING A DISTANCE OF ABOUT 5 MILES(8KMS) A FARM WAS FOUND WATER GOT PETROL STATIONS WERE VERY FEW AND FAR BETWEEN SO SOME PEOPLE USED TO CARRY PETROL ALSO IN JERRY CANS JUST TO TRAVEL FROM TRIVANDRUM CITY TO KOTTAYAM

1930s gasoline hand-cranked fuel pump[THE RED HAND CRANK IS SEEN ON RIGHT CENTER OF THE PUMP.THE CRANK HAS TO BE MOVED TO AND FRO ,SIDE TO SIDE TO PUMP PETROL INTO THE CAR TANK .SUCH PETROL PUMPS WERE ALLOVER INDIA IN 1950 TILL AUTOMATIC PETROL PUMP CAME]

=====================================================
steam bus and steam road rollers[steam road rollers were plenty.road steam buses -were in Travancore (but SOMEHOW MISSED SEEING IT)-THE FUEL WAS CUT WOOD(DIFFICULT TO GET COAL IN TRAVANCORE) ;BUT COULD RUN EVEN ON CUT GRASS ]
A SIMILAR STEAM TRUCK CAN BE SEEN IN MUMBAI{BOMBAY} NEHRU SCIENCE MUSEUM
STEAM ROAD ROLLER WHICH WERE VERY COMMON IN TRAVANCORE ,USED BY P.W.D. DEPARTMENT .THE LAST STEAM ROLLER I SAW IN TRIVANDRUM(THIRUANANDAPUARAM) ABOUT 7 YEARS AGO LYING RUSTING IN P.W.D. OFFICE BEHIND MASCOT HOTEL .I TRIED TO SAVE IT BY REQUESTING THE SCIENCE MUSEUM BUT THEY WERE NOT INTERESTED .TO SAVE IT .
