In 1956, the gap between Cochin and Quilon was closed by a metre gauge link from Ernakulam Junction. The construction of this link line from Ernakulam to Quilon assumed importance when the Cochin port was made into an all weather port

there was regular steam engined trains from ernakulam to quilon.

later this link was made into broad gauge and now it is getting converted to double line showing the growth of population and commerce and travel

These alternate modes of travel made travel by vallam(oar boat) less popular, which was before the only way of through travel from north to south Travancore.

It was very difficult to go to peermade, kumily, vandanmedu and vandi periyar in those days,on the way to periyar wild life sanctuary. The periyar wild life sanctuary itself was without any tourists and crowd as it is now .
During the Travancore-Cochin elections, during a Congress Party procession.[T.C.T. NUMBER PLATE OF TRUCK for Trivandrum district and bullock sign for congress party's original sign-1954- before Indira Gandhi changed it into the present -hand sign ]
once myself had to travel to kumily and towards vandanmed There was only one bus starting from changanacherry at 7 am 'and another one bus to reach from thiruvalla to changancherry at 7 am .luckly we were not late and started the travel towards mundakayam ;which was considered a frontier post dividing the wild forests and tea garden of the western (ghats) mountains from the civilization and populated areas of kanjirappally planes
people were scared to go to these mountainous places in 1950 because of malaria and because of wild animals.also the govt: of travancore was strict in not allowing migration to and agriculture activity in these areas.so most of the people had to eke a living in the plains of Travancore state .

with the popular( read -party) governments of the state coming into power there was mass migration of people to these depopulated and wild areas in 1950 to 1980 making these places into towns and villages ;also to similar depopulated areas of Malabar ,wynad ,Mysore,co org and interiors of Mysore state

our bus reached mundakayam at about 10 am ,3 hours trip from changancherry ,and started the winding grinding upward travel into the mountains of peermade which we reached by 1 pm .then another 2 hours of snail pace travel reached us into vandiperiyar ,which looked like a frontier town of wild west America as seen in films.
Though it was called vandiperiyar town there was no hotel ,no rest rooms just one good shop and a few cigarette bedi shops and few shops for the poor Tamils who worked in the estates as workers.
we were told that it is better not to proceed further to kumily because by the time we reach kumily at 5 pm it will be too late as the whole place shuts down for fear of wild elephants at 6 pm and there are no hotels ,shops or anything ,worse than vandiperiyar ,and that the next bus to anywhere starts from kumily next day at 10 am leaving enough time for wild animals and wild elephants to go away

so we were forced to stay in vandiperiyar for the night .as there was no place to sleep we requested the tea estate Supt: to give us accommodation and food and we were readily given accommodation
