LOW PRICES AND WAGES,LACK OF MEDICAL AND EDUCATION FACILITIES IN KERALA 1950

FIRST INDIAN CAR RENAMED HINDUSTAN 1952
<FOOD OF 1940-1950 WAS SIMPLE AT HOME AND ALSO AT HOTELS.THE FIRST REAL NON VEGETARIAN HOTEL IN TRIVANDRUM WAS AZAD HOTEL IN CHALAI BAZAR AND ONE FULL CHICKEN BIRIYANI OR MUTTON PULAV OR BEEF WAS JUST RUPEE ONE ONLY WHICH INCLUDED A CUP OF THICK CURD TWO OR MORE PAPADAMS ETC AND ONE SWEET DISH .NOW SAME FOOD IS PRICED VERY HIGH, DEPENDS ON THE STAR VALUE OF HOTELS
MOST PEOPLE COULD NOT AFFORD EVEN THIS RUPEE ONE FOOD AS THE DAILY WAGE OF A MAN WHO WORKED ON THE FIELDS FROM MORNING 8 TO EVENING 5 WAS JUST 4 ANNAS(25 PAISE OR 1/4 RUPEE)THERE WAS NO POLITICAL PARTIES THOSE DAYS AND THE MAN WHO EMPLOYED THEM HAD FULL POWER TO EXTRACT THE FULL WORK OR EVEN EXTRA WORK FROM THESE DAILY LABOURERS.AND THE CONDITION OF THESE DAILY WAGE EARNERS WERE VERY PITIFUL AND PATHETIC .THEY HAD NO EDUCATION NOT ENOUGH TO EAT NO PLACE TO STAY OR JUST SMALL MUD HUTS TO STAY, NO MEDICAL FACILITIES AVAILABLE.BECAUSE OF THEIR ABJECT POVERTY THE ONLY TREATMENT AVAILABLE TO THEM WAS BLACK MAGIC AND TUBERS LEAVES ETC GIVEN TO THEM BY MAGICIAN (MANTHRA VADI)AND PAYMENT FOR TREATMENT WAS A HEN TO THE MAGICIAN WHICH ALSO HE USED TO KILL IN FRONT OF THE APPROPRIATE GODS AND EAT AFTER COOKING BUT SOME USED TO DRINK THE RAW BLOOD FROM THE CUT THROAT OF THE HENS TO APPEASE THE GODS SO THAT THE DISEASE WILL DEPART FROM THE AFFECTED .DISEASES WERE CONSIDERED CAUSED BY GODS TO SHOW THEIR DISPLEASURE AND ONLY WAY TO GET RELIEF WAS TO PLEASE THE GODS CAUSING IT ,AS DIAGNOSED BY THE MAGICIAN

COLLEGES WERE RARE AND FEW ,AND AVAILABLE ONLY IN TRIVANDRUM KOTTAYAM ETC FEW PLACES

FIRST MEDICAL COLLEGE WAS IN TRIVANDRUM OPENED BY NEHRU.I CAN REMEMBER HIS SPEECH "WE NEED MANY MANY MORE OF SUCH TECHNICAL AND MEDICAL INSTITUTES"
some memories of life:-
school uniforms were unknown in 1950 and 1960.in fact i can remember going to school with same dress as home; one day didn't have time to change ,and went with same dress ,a pyjama which i wore for sleeping and a shirt !! and nobody questioned me about it at home or in school!!and no shoe of course not even a chapel(slip on) for the feet ,because majority 99% of children used to come to school and even college without a chapel .
In fact the majority of people in trivandrum city used to walk about bare footed, either because of poverty or just because they never thought it as essential !!
nobody now will believe the above now .in fact the first popular foot wear to arrive in trivandrum was a simple chapel with two black shining horizontal straps ,.it became a raging novelty and people began wearing it and the habit of a foot wear started in 1955.
In college students used to wear only white mundu a shirt and no chappel till 1960.
in fact i myself used to attend university college trivandrum in that dress and no chapel!!
I don't whether to laugh about those times
in fact O.N.V.KURUP WAS MY MALAYALAM professor and he was not yet a mahakavi of Malayalam in 1950s,AND remember him also walking around college in Malayalam dress don't know whether he has changed to pants now?
using pants or English type of dress was looked down upon ,and also people could not afford to buy due to low wages
A college principal was getting just Rs:400/ per month in 1950s while peons were getting below Rs 100/per month
Very very few people used to put on pant and they were called "KOPE THOORI"MEANS ONE WHO SHIT IN A CUP=basin
[ ONE WHO USES AN ENGLISH TYPE OF COMMODE WHICH WAS MADE LIKE A CUP !! SO THE NAME KOOPPE THOORI = YOU SHIT IN A ROOM INTO A COMMODE LIKE AN ENGLISH MAN AND ALSO WEAR AN ENGLISH MANS DRESS!!!]while most common people used to depend on "THOOTTI"[A MAN WHO COMES REGULARLY IN THE MORNING, TO ALL HOUSES TO TAKE AWAY THE SHIT, IN A BUCKET ,TO BE CARRIED ON HIS HEAD TO THE MUNICIPAL SHIT DUMP .BECAUSE DRAINAGE AND ENGLISH/INDIAN TYPE OF COMMODES WERE ONLY USED BY A SMALL MINORITY OF PEOPLE ]

GOING TO A HOTEL OR EATING OUT WAS NOT A FASHION AND ALSO UN AFFORDABLE TO MOST .EXCEPT OF COURSE DAY LABOURERS (ONE DAY SALARY ONLY 8 ANNAS=50 PAISE).CAN REMEMBER LABOURERS EATING PUTTU OR APPAM OR KAPPA/AND OR RICE WITH JUST A VEGETABLE OR JUST A CURRY MADE WITH MASALA + WATER ,OR JUST A FISH CURRY.
EATING MEAT WAS NOT COMMON FOR MOST BECAUSE OF THE COST AND NO WHEAT PRODUCTS LIKE CHAP PATTI,BAROTTA WERE NEVER HEARD OR TASTED BY MOST.I CAN REMEMBER MY COUSINS FROM NORTH INDIA COMING AND SHOWING MY MOTHER TO MAKE CHAPATTI WHICH WAS A NOVELTY IN 1950
AS THERE WAS NO CITY SERVICE BUS AVAILABLE IN EARLY 1950 MOST TRAVELED ON FOOT/BULLOCK CART OR JATKA=HORSE CARRIAGE AND A FEW CYCLES OR A RARE MOTOR CYCLE OR HAND PULLED RICKSHAW.SCOOTERS WERE NEVER HEARD OF OR SEEN OR EVEN DREAMT OF IN 1950S.AND AUTO RICKSHAW WHICH IS A SCOOTER PULLED RICKSHAW CAME MUCH MUCH LATER
ALL THE CARS ON ROAD WERE FOREIGN MADE,NO INDIAN CARS WERE MADE IN EARLY 1950.THE FIRST INDIAN CAR COMPLETELY MADE INDIA WAS AN ENGLISH CAR MORRIS OXFORD RENAMED HINDUSTAN IN 1957 THOUGH IN 1952 ITSELF CARS IMPORTED FROM ENGLAND AND RENAMED HINDUSTAN WAS AVAILABLE
FIRST INDIAN CAR CAME TO MARIKKAR MOTORS TRIVANDRUM IN 1952 AND
THERE WAS A CROWD TO SEE AN INDIAN MADE CAR.MARIKKAR THE OWNER MADE A GIMMICK TO ATTRACT MORE OF US BY PUTTING A HIDDEN MICRO PHONE AND HIDDEN SPEAKER INSIDE THE OPEN BONNET OF THE CAR .PEOPLE USED TO QUE UP TO TALK TO THE TALKING CAR !!!ASK THE CAR ANY QUESTION INSIDE THE OPEN BONNET AND THE CAR GIVES A PROMPT ANSWER.MOST PEOPLE OF TRIVANDRUM USED TO WONDER HOW A CAR CAN TALK BACK!!MANY SUSPECTED SOME TRICK !SOME EVEN THOUGHT A MAN IS HIDING IN THE CAR!!
NEXT TO MARIKKAR MOTORS WAS STANES MOTORS SELLING FOREIGN CARS TILL 1960'S WHICH, LATER CLOSED DOWN, DUE TO THE CANCER OF KERALA, ALSO KNOWN AS POLITICS OF LABOUR STRIKES.
IN BETWEEN MARIKKAR MOTORS AND STANESMOTORS WAS AN OLD GRAND SHOP KNOWN AS 'KODER'RUN BY A COCHIN JEW ONE OF THE VERY FEW GRAND SHOPS OF TRIVANDRUM OF 1950

ALONG WITH ENGLISH MANAGED 'SPENCER'NEXT TO UNIVERSITY COLLEGE GATE WHERE UNHEARD OF FOREIGN GOODS WERE AVAILABLE ,AS AT THAT TIME INDIAN GOVERNMENT HAD NOT BANNED IMPORTS OF FOREIGN GOODS YET
CAN REMEMBER MY SELF AND MY ELDER BROTHER WALKING AROUND ON THE ALMOST EMPTY STREETS(EMPTY OF MOTOR VEHICLES AND PEOPLE, OF THE GENERATION BOOM OF 1970 ONWARDS) STREETS OF TRIVANDRUM IN 1950 .
OUR AIM WAS TO COLLECT THE NAMES OF CARS OM THE STREETS OF TRIVANDRUM.IT WAS PLEASANT TO WALK PLUS FIND NAMES OF CARS ! ALL CARS WERE MADE IN FOREIGN COUNTRIES.NOT EVEN ONE INDIAN MADE CAR.NOW I THINK IT WAS THE POLICY OF OUR SLAVE MASTERS KNOWN AS ENGLISH TO SELL THEIR PRODUCT IN INDIA,TO MAKE MONEY PLUS BAN INDIAN PRODUCTION .
SOME NAMES OF CARS I CAN STILL REMEMBER:-CITROEN(FRANCE)PACKARD(AMERICA)VAUXHALL(ENGLISH)AUSTIN(ENGLISH)HUMBER(ENGLISH),TOTAL 44 DIFFERENT CAR NAMES WE COLLECTED FROM THE STREETS OF 1950 TRIVANDRUM CITY
MOST TAXIS WERE AMERICAN FORDS/CHEVROLET,CHRYSLER,AND ENGLISH AUSTINS AND A FEW GERMAN CARS.PUTTING YELLOW COLOR ON TAXI WAS NOT DONE IN THOSE DAYS,LATER YELLOW AND BLACK AMBASSADOR TAXIS CAME ON ROAD WITH METER AND USED TO TAKE PEOPLE AND CHARGE PER METER AND GOVERNMENT ARRANGED CHARGES
BUT THAT LASTED A FEW YEARS ONLY BEFORE THE SYSTEM BROKE DOWN BY VIOLENT POLITICAL PARTY(COMMUNIST)RUN STRIKES .NOW ONLY PRIVATE TAXIS AVAILABLE IN KERALA AND THEY CHARGE ANY THING EXORBITANT CHARGE TO THE COMMON MAN
THAT IS WHY I SAY COMMON MAN IS A SLAVE NOW OF LABOUR/UNIONS/POLITICAL PARTIES AND PARTY GOONDAS
FROM SLAVERY OF ENGLISH TO SLAVERY OF VIOLENT POLITICAL PARTIES
AND I AM SAD TO SAY VIOLENCE CAME TO KERALA POLITICS THROUGH THE LEFTISTS(NOT SOCIALISTS BUT COMMUNISTS)
THE FIRST GENERAL STRIKE IN KERALA WAS THE TRANSPORT STRIKE OF 1950S LED BY T.V.THOMAS A COMMUNIST LEADER .PEOPLE WERE SCARED TO TAKE ON POLICE OR GOVERNMENT THOSE DAYS .SO THE SLOGAN OF T.V. THOMAS TO LEAD THE STRIKE WAS "POOLISU JNANGALKKU PULLAANU PULLAANU"MEANS WE ARE NOT SCARED OF POLICE
NOW SEE THE CONDITION OF POLICE IN KERALA ! POLICE IS SCARED OF COMMUNIST PARTY AND THEIR VIOLENT FOLLOWERS!!
THOSE DAYS BUSES WERE MADE FROM IMPORTED BED FORD(ENGLAND)CHEVROLET(AMERICAN)
BEFORE THE TRANSPORT UNIONS BROUGHT VIOLENCE TO EVERYDAY LIFE AS IT IS NOW DRIVER AND BUS CONDUCTOR WERE VERY GOOD MANNERED AND TICKET CHECKER HAD THE REAL POWER TO CHECK TICKETS /CONDUCTOR BUS CLEANLINESS AND ALL .NOW THE UNION DECIDES EVERY THING AND COMMON MAN SITS SCARED TO UTTER A WORD IN FRONT OF VIOLENT DRIVER/CONDUCTOR/CHECKER IN FACT THE WHOLE SYSTEMATIC LIFE HAS BEEN SUBVERTED BY PARTIES
CAN REMEMBER THE ILAYARAJA GOING AROUND AT THE LEAD OF A POSSE OF MOUNTED POLICE EVERY MORNING ,THEY USED TO ADVICE WHO WALK ON THE ROAD TO WALK ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD ,MAY BE TO AVOID LEFT SIDED TRAFFIC .
CAN ANYBODY ADVISE ANYBODY IN THE PRESENT DAY VIOLENT WORLD WITHOUT GETTING BEATEN UP OR EVEN KILLED?!
PEOPLE ARE BETTER OFF NOW ,RICHER BETTER EDUCATED,AND LEADS A BETTER LIFE THAN 1950 BUT IT IS A VIOLENT WORLD IN KERALA NOW,NOT THE LAW ABIDING QUIET LIFE OF 1950
ABOUT 1950 :- ALL PETROL PUMPS WERE HAND OPERATED MEANS ONE HAS TO PUSH AND PULL A SHORT HANDLE ON THE PUMP TO MAKE THE PETROL FLOW INTO TANK.AND PETROL WAS CHEAP OR KEPT CHEAP BY ENGLISH TRICKERY TILL ARABS AND IRAN REVOLTED IN 1970 AND PETROL PRICES SHOT UP
1 GALLON PETROL WAS 15 RUPEES,1 GALLON= 4 LITER =15 RUPEES
1 LITER WAS 3 RUPEES
NOW PRICE NEARING 60 RUPEES/LITER
NOW AMERICAN WHOLE SALE BUSINESS PEOPLE ALSO JUMPED INTO PRICE MANIPULATION OF PETROL ON STOCK MARKET SO PRICES WILL GO UP AND UP.
