KEROSENE FAN

Now a days everybody in kerala wants wheat , as many have diabetes and as a fashion ,even in hotels waiters ask first whether you want (wheat) chappathi, barotta etc .
1950s people used to eat mainly rice and a chuttny made from mango(taken from a tree around, plus a puzhuk (side dish, baji)made from chakka (made famous as jackka and still later, as jack fruit by English colonialist). This side dish was also from a home grown tree.

AS IN THOSE DAYS COWS WERE RARE AND NO DIARY BUSINESS WORTH THE NAME EXCEPT SUPPLY OF SOME MILK AROUND THE VILLAGE MILK AND AND MILK PRODUCTS WERE ALSO DIFFICULT TO GET,AND I CAN REMEMBER TRIVANDRUM CITY HAD ONLY ONE ICE CREAM PARLOUR IN 1946.people USED TO DRINK MOORU( MILK CURD(yoghurt) MIXED WITH WATER & SOME GREEN CHILLI)CURD WAS NOT POPULAR AS DRINK OR FOOD EXCEPT MOORU CURRY MADE FROM CURD ALSO KNOWN AS KAATCHIYA MOORU .SIMILARLY DUE TO THE NON AVAILABILITY OF ICE AND ICECREAMS PLUS MOST OF TRAVANCORE STATE HAD NO ELECTRICITY EXCEPT IN A FEW BIG TOWNS IT WAS NOT POPULAR.SO MANY PEOPLE USED TO DRINK COFFE WITH OUT MILK (KATTAN KAAPPI)TEA BECAME POPULAR LATER IN THE VILLAGES THOUGH TEA ESTATES WERE PLENTY

I CAN REMEMBER THE FIRST FRIDGE IN OUR VILLAGE NEAR THIRUVALLA WORKED ON KEROSENE (NOBODY NOW MIGHT HAVE SEEN OR HEARD OF IT ) WORKS ON A KEROSENE LAMP AT THE BACK BOTTOM OF THE FRIDGE AND FLAME AND HEAT FROM THE KEROSENE LAMP TRAVELS UP A CHIMNEY AND HEATS UP AND OR VAPORIZES AMMONIA GAS WHICH IN TURN COOLS THE FRIDGE

SIMILARLY WE HAD A KEROSENE FAN , IT WAS A PEDESTAL FAN ABOUT 3 FEET HEIGHT ,GIVES GOOD BREEZE ,BUT USED TO WORK ON KEROSENE AGAIN A SMALL LAMP AT THE BACK .ALL THESE WERE THERE AS THERE WAS NO ELECTRIC LINES IN MOST PLACES ,NOT THE CURRENT CUT AS OF NOW.

OUR RADIO WORKED ON A CAR BATTERY .I MEAN THE BIG RADIOS OF THOSE TIMES .AT THAT TIME TRANSISTOR WAS NOT YET DISCOVERED AND OF COURSE NOBODY EVER DREAMT AT THAT TIME OF ANYTHING LIKE A COMPUTER OR INTERNET ETC WHICH ALL CAME AFTER 1970.IT WAS DIFFICULT TO CATCH RADIO WAVES SO A WIRE WAS STRUNG HIGH BETWEEN TWO COCNUT TREES ON TWO BAMBOO POLES WITH A WIRE COMING ALL THE WAY DOWN TO OUR RADIO WITH THE HARD TO GET RADIO WAVES.TV WAS IN THOSE TIMES JUST DISCOVERED IN USA I USED HEAR BUT TV STATIOS AND PROGRAMES ETC CAME MUCH LATER AND INDIA ,HAD TV ONLY DURING INDIRA GANDHI'S TIME AROUND 1970.THERE WERE NO PRIVATE RADIO STATION IN INDIA AND IT WAS INDIAN GOVT POLICY IN THOSE DAYS NOT TO SUPPORT FILM MUSIC!!SO THOSE WHO WANTED TO HEAR HINDI OR ENGLISH MUSIC HAD TO DEPEND ON RADIO CEYLON(NOW SRILANKA)DURING LIGHTNINGS THE AERIAL WIRE FROM AMONG THE COCONUT TREE USED TO GET PULLED OUT OF THE RADIO PLUG TO PREVENT DAMAGE
AND ALSO RADIO GOA (THOSE DAYS GOA WAS UNDER PORTUGESE RULE TILL 1960S)RADIO GOA USED TO BEAM HINDI MUSIC AND IT WAS VERY POPULAR AND I LIKED HEARING LATA MANGESHKAR THEN AND NOW .WE MUST BE HAPPY TO HAVE THIS LIVING LEGEND NAMED LATA MANGESHKAR STILL ALIVE .I USED TO HEAR MORE OF RADIO CEYLON AND ITS BINACA GEETH MALA PROGRAM OF HINDI MUSIC,AND SOME TIME A RARE PROGRAM OF ENGLISH MUSIC AND I USED TO LIKE ENGLISH MUSIC BECAUSE IT WAS SUNG SLOW AND CLEAR WITH BEAUTIFUL MELODIES (NOT LIKE THE PRESENT DAY FAST MUSIC AND CHAT CUM TALK MUSIC CALLED RAP)
